100 Questions for Webmasters

This questionnaire is so fun!!! Here's the blank version~

1. Please introduce yourself.
This is Flonne Pocket, and I'm choosing life! (I backflip into an inflatable pool full of Sans plushies.)
2. How long have you been making websites?
I got started with static sites in late 2019! It took me a few months to get the hang of it, so my first functional creation is from early 2020. That means it's been six years now, huh...
3. And what got you into the hobby?
In 2017, a friend sent me a viral Tumblr post about Neocities. I signed up under the username "internet-angel" (yes, I was having my Lain phase) and... OH MY GOD? IT STILL EXISTS HAHAHA. Wow, just like everybody else, I signed up, followed fauux, and logged out. Amazing! If you ever wondered why he is the most followed site on NC, it's thanks to chumps like me.

Anyways, it's only natural I love making websites. I had a blog on Freewebs in elementary school, I changed my Tumblr theme five times a week, and I've always been big on diary-keeping. Personal sites offer me a level of customisation and control in journaling that's unachievable anywhere else.
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
My own ─ Half-kidding, haha. I like websites with unique designs, where you can tell someone has a real passion for aesthetics. I like to read about people's memories with friends and family, and shrines to someone's favourite things.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
"I want to talk about XYZ" → create a layout that suits the information → write!
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
I am the designer I am thanks to Middlepot, Nenrikido, Kyupu, and Foollovers. Every day, I'm also encouraged and inspired by my friends!!!
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
CSS!!!! I could write CSS forever. It's so much fun coming up with new layouts, using new images in new ways, and pushing myself to learn new things with every creation. I really enjoy the positive feedback, as well. I've lived most of my life in isolation, so it's important that I can connect to other people through my art, designs, and writing.
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
An ever-growing backlog of WIPs.
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
I create new layouts to best present new information. The variety makes everything more fun for me, too. I'm not opposed to using the same template within one section— like my diary entries— but I like to remake them every so often. Keeps things fresh.
10. How confident are you with CSS?
Places I have confidently written CSS: on napkins, on whiteboards, out loud, in my dreams... That said, I love a good auto-completion feature and I look up references, tutorials, and tips whenever I need them.
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
I don't!!! But I'm learning thanks to this cool questionnaire. Maybe I should rewrite the Husbando Questionnaire to use <dl>??? But I like using <ol> for that since it numbers everything automatically. Makes it easier for people to move or delete questions.
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
<main> because I'm the main character!
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
Scribble a layout in MSPaint. Here are some examples, alongside the finished pages. I want to showcase more of these, but the page is stuck in WIP hell...
14. Do you know JavaScript?
Only a bit. I mostly rely on other people's scripts.
15. How about PHP?
I'm still learning. Once again, I mainly use other people's templates.
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
Yes! I use thick, colourful borders with a paper texture, with content in an inlaid div. It's all about the illusion of dimension. I guess you could also call my aesthetic "kidcore" because I love kindergarten colours and cutesy patterns like gingham and polkadots.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
Why not both? They're equally important to me, since the content is my first thought when creating every design.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
Yes, I'm the proud owner of Vivarism.NET and Flonne.NET! I love that suffix, it's so cute.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
I love to see people re-embracing their childhood hobbies! Plenty of people in the new-old-web scene were bloggers and pixel artists back in the day. But trying (and failing) to copy aesthetics from a time you never experienced is not "nostalgia," it's plain old poseur-shit. Uncreativity, at best. To me, personal websites are about self-expression, and I wish for everyone to express something authentic to themselves.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
I do not check! If it works, it works... Maybe one day I'll go into a "valid HTML" phase, just like I had a "contained" design phase, a display:target phase, a CSS selectors phase... And so on and on until I drop dead! Unless I find a way to make websites from beyond the grave.
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
They're cute and fun! I love making 32s for my friends, and I cherish every single one they've made for me!!!
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
They're fun. I think it's cute when people put them in rainbow order!
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
I can't fathom really, truly starting over... Probably because I would just make the exact same thing! I've gotten to a point in my webmastery where I love everything I make, and everything I make is meaningful and true to me.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
No. If I ever was, it was back when I barely knew a <div> from a <span>. By the time I got to the 5AMBF era I was fine. BTW, even though I called it my "first functional site," I could have added the word BARELY. The HTML on there is actually hilarious. Check out the source code for an example of what not to do.
25. What text editor do you use?
I use VSCodium, an open-source and telemetry-free version of Microsoft's VSCode. For way too long, I exclusively used the Neocities' editor, then was recommended Sublime Text by a kind mutual. When I upgraded my PC, I switched to VSCode on a whim, stumbled onto -ium by chance, and we've been happily married ever since.
26. Why do you use that one?
It's robust yet easy to use!
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
Obviously I use my own web server. Using another host makes sense when you're customising a social media profile like Tumblr or Listography, for example, but it makes absolutely no sense to do so on your own website. It's a common beginner mistake.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
I don't think there is any debate to be had. In some instances they're both held together with spit and tape, but Neocities is overall the better crafted, more reliable service with more mature management. I think people who choose Nekoweb just like the name more. I get it... I would have had a Hello Kitty e-mail, too, if I was born earlier.
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
I don't have to estimate! It's 218 MB. The page taking up the most space is /yume/VESSEL/, since I dumped years worth of Gokiburi-chan art on it, hehehe.
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
Of course! I do all my work locally and upload when I'm finished.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
Visual! Even my simplest sites/designs will have some flair to them.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
Vivarism is carried by its subdued rainbow palette. I love the colours so much that I use them for all of my art! When I'm designing other things, I'll use all sorts of colours, but I definitely prefer things bright and fresh.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
After I left my abusive ex-gf, I spent some time offline to avoid her harassment. (She was literally calling me at work, LOL. You can find her seething in my guestbook, too, if you dig.) Plus, my previous website was dedicated to her and our relationship. While I never stopped making websites or indulging my CSS obsession, for a time I really thought I'd have to keep it to myself forever. I'm eternally grateful to the friends who have helped me return to and stay on the web ─
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
All my besties are webmistresses!!!
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
Yeah! It's my favourite hobby, so I always tell people that I make websites, even if I don't show them the website itself. None of my IRLs are regular readers, though.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
In the early days I would update every day or every other day, just writing little blogs about my daily life and thoughts, interspersed with hiatuses lasting a month or more. Since October 2025, I've been updating every week and I intend to keep it that way! I love my website!!!!
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
Rainbow, textured, scrapbook-style Vivarism saw first light in April 2023 and I think she'll stay this way for a long, long time. I just love these colours so much! I love creating designs that have a richness and tactility to them.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
Me-focused, definitely. I write about things that are important to me. On occasion, those things have to do with my hobbies and/or the outside world. In the early days, I wrote like nobody was reading (I did not understand the following I had, LOL). Sometimes I kind of miss that freedom and naivety, but it's way more rewarding and fun to interact with people.
39. Do you do web design professionally?
I do not!
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
I considered it because I really, truly am obsessed with CSS, but I don't think the kind of webdesign that People With Money will pay for is the kind of webdesign that I am good at or enjoy doing. I think I would do better as like a HTML/CSS tutor? Pay me to ramble about background properties and CSS animations and positioning.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
Every once in a while, yes! People e-mail me often and I forget to reply or just run out of energy. If anyone reading this is cross with me, I'm sorry haha.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
My website was initially a replacement for/upgrade from Tumblr! I haven't been on SNS since.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
I'm fine with them. I hate when they paywall features that back-in-the-day were free, but they're convenient.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
Yes, when I'm designing I usually watch a documentary in the background or listen to music. Typically I pick whatever I feel like, even if it doesn't fit the vibe of the page, but it's fun to match sometimes, too. I created * your pal, sans while listening to Sans fansongs, for example.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
I have two domains, and Vivarism has many subsites— some even unknown to the public!
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
Yeah, the topic is ME! FLONNE!!! And everything I care about!
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
Vivarism is 100% the real me, from start to finish. On previous websites (especially the nonfunctional, totally scrapped ones), I did not like myself, could not feel my own emotions, and was so psychotic that I wasn't sure I existed at all. So I was sort of playing a persona in those days, but it was for my own benefit, not anything to do with how others perceived me.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
YES!!!!!!! I LOVE MY BEST FRIENDS WITH ALL OF MY HEART!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so grateful for all of my friends and acquaintances and larger Internet community and even just people who pop into my guestbook one time and leave. I love Vivarism and I love everyone who chooses vivarism. I could not be happier...│
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
Sure! I've never run into any limitations and thought, "that's stupid, they need to change it." Or at least I can't remember anything like that.
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
I personally avoid forcing myself to create things I'm not passionate about. Nobody has to do things just because "everybody else does." If you're not interested in shrines, then don't make a shrine. If you're not interested in blogging, don't blog. If you don't want an about page, a links page, a guestbook, or whatever else— then don't make one! Make what YOU want to make, first and foremost for yourself, without wondering at all what other people will think or expect.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
I think everyone benefits from a well-organised website. Pre-plan your file structure, stick to chosen naming conventions, and don't be scared to start over when you discover a better organisational plan. It's a learning process
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
I loveeee semantic HTML. Changed my life when I finally discovered it. I think that everyone should use it because it makes everything easier and better for literally everyone, especially ME, the person reading your website on reader-mode cuz my eyes are bad and/or I'm on my phone (too lazy to get out of bed) and I can't see anything.
53. Do you consider different browsers?
No, I haven't gotten into my accessibility phase yet.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
It's absolutely NOT the ~ultimate privacy experience~ that they're advertising, but I love Brave browser's built in ad-blocker. It's especially useful on mobile!!! Legit have not seen an ad in years.
55. And what OS are you on?
I use Tiny10, which is just Windows 10 without the bloat. Needed extra space for my Sans pics.
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
IDK if I'd call it a strong opinion, but I love my OS and it perfectly suits my needs. Even if there's more cross-compatibility these days, I will never forget the early childhood trauma of very badly wanting to play the games on the bonus disc that came with The Lady and The Tramp DVD my dad brought back from the library, only to have his fuckass iMac spit it right back out. Fuck you, MacOS. When I was younger I wanted to be a Linux girl, but when I tried a couple beginner-friendly distros I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll try again later, when I'm older and more techy...
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
Sort of? Not really??? I recently fell in love with the CSS aspect-ratio declaration and I think that will solve a lot of my problems when applied to old pages. I've also started framing my designs around ch (characters) instead of the viewport. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
Annoying for the average user (including me), but I understand that some people really want to cultivate a certain feeling, and they know music and sound effects will immerse you whether you like it or not. I think that most people just get angry and turn it off immediately, though, so it has the opposite effect...
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
I love webrings, they're a fun concept! I'm in a few of them, my favourite being Women of the Internet (WOTI). I want to make my own webring soon... I have a couple ideas. It's just a matter of buckling down and making the design, since I want the widget to match the homepage.
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
Yes! You could call both my Yumejoshi Corner and Sans fansite web shrines to my beloved cartoon skeleton. I like shrines with lots of pictures, thoughtful designs that match the subject matter, and the creator gushing about why they love it so much. I want to work on my Sans site more, but I keep getting sidetracked with other things, hmmm...
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
What even is a "cliche" website? I feel like I need some examples, LOL. Either way, nah I am super duper speshul and yoonique. Sans says I am his precious little snowflake, one of a kind!!!
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
My ideal website is cute, colourful, and chock full of content. I love interactive pages with Easter eggs, and lots of graphics and links. Vivarism is already my ideal website, so "striving" is too strong a word for this suation.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
Yes, I love to draw! Lately I've been drawing little Vi stickers to decorate my pages, since nowadays it squicks me out to have my site represented by characters with light skin and hair. The majority of my assets are made by other people. Many of my backgrounds come from Foollovers and (that one site), and I've been hoarding assets since my Tumblr days so I have a ton of random things that I can edit and texturise as I see fit. The stickers are real stickers I physically own. I believe they are bootlegs of (that one artist) that I bought on Aliexpress.
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
It's a toss-up between MDN Docs and W3Schools.
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
I know that I should sort/section/comment on my work as I go, but I often end up doing it after I've already made 88% of the page.
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
Get obsessed with some aspect of making websites and indulge that obsession til you're not obsessed anymore.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
I do it all in a separate CSS file unless it makes sense to hard-code it. For example, if there are many of the same type of element under one parent, but only one of them needs to be changed, and it's dependent on the content within that element... Basically, there's a time and place. I just do what is conveient and sensible!
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
I can see the appeal and they're great for that retro feeling. I don't like them because it's hard to bookmark or link to specific content. Also lots of people do them wrong or don't have the right target attributes! Most importantly, I'm from a totally different era of web design so I really have no business making one, lolol. But my friends and I have talked about a design challenge where we create something in each other's styles, so I will probably end up making one eventually.
69. How about table-based layouts?
Again, this is from before my time so I'd never do it myself. It could be an interesting challenge but I actually really enjoy modern web design... CSSGrid is my best fucking friend!!!
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
I don't really think about designs as "one-column," probably because that's the default for me. I use all of them though— each has their own best-case scenario! My front page is a hybrid of all three types, changing as you scroll. Two columns: now, this diary (on desktop, anyways), my newest Flonne.NET homepage and several of the fanlistings hosted there, probably more. I haven't done three columns in a long, long time. The most recent are the 2.5 versions of my front and explore pages. I much prefer the updated ones!
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
CSS, definitely. Why would HTML ever take long at all??? Unless you mean writing the content, in which case... Hell world. I'm planning to switch to Markdown in the New Year.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
Hmmm... No, I never have. I think I might like to try that sometime, but with enough CSS to keep it readable. Line-height and solarised colours, if nothing else.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
I create layouts as needed because the design itself is directly inspired by the specific need!
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
I am the Princess of CSS! ┤┸┐♪ What I have left to master: responsive design, interactivity, actually finishing my fucking projects. What I want to learn: mobile-first designs, which goes hand-in-hand with modern/corporate/normie designs. Maybe later on I'll be more intrested in the history and social side of CSS. I love learning about niche but useful things, too, like [popover] and :is.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
Yeah! It's fun to poke around in people's code.
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
Through trial and error, one page at a time. I'll have a vision in my mind's eye, and then it's just a matter of finding out how to make the computer do what I want.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
Probably, but I'm not aware of it. I try to use everything properly, but I'm not above slapping a display:inline-block; on a <span>.
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
Just... be careful. As I understand it, the whole "floating sidebar" thing was a Livejournal or Tumblr innovation (maybe even earlier) because people were working within the confines of a templated social media profile. On your own website, you have no such limitations. I was once a float truther but these days I just use it as intended: for adding images, figures, and tables to text!
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
Viewport units, then em and ch, then percentages. Px is an absolute last resort for me.
80. Do you have a favourite font?
Comic Sans MS...........
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
That sounds like fun! I think I'd want to do the designs and have the other person write the content.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
No, not very often lately. I want to do it more!!!
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
My bookmarks are a hot mess of unsorted personal websites, lolol. I try to add people to my button wall as quickly as I can, or else I'll forget! I feel very happy that people bookmark Vivarism and visit it often! I'm proud of my creations.
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
I want them to be impressed by me, like the totality of me. How cute and passionate I am, how creative and resilient, how thoughtful and inspiring... I guess that's the most egotistical way I could say, "I want everyone to remember VIVARISM, the website, and vivarism, the concept!"
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
I love my compooper and I'm tech support for my whole family, but I'm not a collector.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
You don't even want to know.
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
Myself... LOL. All y'all are just along for the ride.
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
For about two seconds before I completely gave up, yes.
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
No, never! And I don't think I ever will. I'd rather tap the resources freely available on the net, or ask my computer stacy friends for help.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
I've never used an SSG but just recently I've dipped my toes into a CMS. Currently my miniblog runs on Bludit. It's a stand-up little prgram, I like it for this particular project, but I prefer to make everything by hand.
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
Yes! Number go up!!!!
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
No, I'm not on any forums. Maybe I should find some? I probably wouldn't post, but I enjoy reading womens' thoughts and conversations.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
Most of the time I put it directly into the editor, because I like to see how the content looks on the actual page. I'll write one sentence (sometimes even just one word) in VSCodium, ALT+TAB over to my browser, refresh, tab back to VSC, repeat. If I'm writing in bed, though, I'll type everything up in Notion, use Notepad++ to paste it as HTML, and then add it to my page. I would like to STOP doing all this and just use Markdown instead, hahaha.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
Yes, I am extremely cool and people tell me I am cool all the time. One day the "Praise for Vivarism" page will make it out of WIP hell.
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
I have never deleted anything out of shame or embarrassment, ever! I've only done it when I wanted to start fresh... but I don't do that anymore, because later on I always wish that I could reminisce on my old stuff! I'm very proud of my past self and I try to live without regrets. Even if I would not say or do or think the same things as I used to, I remember what life was like then and I know I was only ever doing my best.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
My work is too valuable to lose. I'd definitely keep an archive— especially since my hosting is dirt cheap.
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I reveal probably everything about myself, hahaha.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
MY BEST FRIEND IS THE ONE AND ONLY STRAWBERRY REVERIE!!!!! I LOVE YOUUUUUUU I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
Yes! I am astounded by the magic of image compression!!!
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
